Firing Service Terms & Conditions
We are not responsible for broken pieces.
Sometimes things don’t go as planned in the firing process, and not all pieces will survive, but we’ll do our best! Please remember that this is part of the process, and we can’t take responsibility for things beyond our control.
To help avoid issues, please make sure to read the topics below.
Kiln DAMAGE
If kiln shelves are damaged from overflowing glaze or misplaced work, there will be a $20 cleaning fee for each damaged shelf.
If your work ruins a kiln shelf, you’ll need to pay for its replacement.
If your work damages the kiln's interior, you'll be charged a fine based on the damage severity, as determined by the manager.
We will NOT fire:
Wet work: All pieces must be 100% dry when placed on the firing shelves. Moisture can cause rust and damage the kiln, and it may explode when heated. If your work feels cool to the touch, it still has moisture.
Foreign materials: No paper, metal, wood, or other foreign materials. They can damage the kiln elements.
Glazed greenware: Raw clay with glaze can be hazardous for both the work and the kiln.
Greenware to maturity temperatures: All pieces must be bisque fired first for safety.
Glazed bases: Work with glazed bases will stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Feeney’s Buff Raku Trachyte: Must be accompanied by a clay setter (see BRT).
Solid or very thick pieces: Anything thicker than 5 cm is likely to explode.
Hazardous materials: We will not fire any work that poses a risk to staff or our kilns. Safety first!
Homemade clay: All clay must be commercially manufactured.
Pieces fully enclosed or/and it’s a hollow that doesn’t have a hole: This WILL explode if you don’t poke a hole (AKA Kiln Grenade)!
